## What is agentic advertising?

Agentic advertising is advertising aimed at the AI agents that read on a person's behalf, so when a developer asks an assistant for a tool, your product and facts are what it finds: paid presence in the sources agents trust.

Also called: Agent Ads, Ads in AI assistants, Advertising to AI agents.

A growing share of developer discovery goes through an assistant: "what should I use for X" asked of ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or a coding agent, which reads a handful of sources and answers. The sources it reads are the new inventory. Advertising to agents means placing your facts, in machine-readable form, where those agents already look.

It differs from ads inside the assistants themselves, which are a separate and still-forming channel. Agentic advertising works on the sources upstream: a trusted developer platform whose pages assistants cite, with your content and facts published there in the formats agents read (markdown twins, llms.txt, structured data).

It is measured in prompts: the share of answers to your buyers' questions that mention you, across assistants, tracked before and during the campaign, plus the referrals that arrive from assistant domains. The craft is the same as answer engine optimization, with distribution added.

## How do AI agents decide which tools to recommend?

An assistant answering "what should I use for X" either draws on what it learned in training or searches live, reads a handful of pages, and composes an answer with citations. In both cases the inputs are the sources it trusts: documentation, well-read technical content, community discussion, and a small set of developer platforms whose pages it has learned to cite. The facts on those pages, and the consistency of those facts across them, decide whether and how a product is named.

Agents inside developer tools (coding assistants, research agents) do the same with fewer sources, and they prefer pages they can read as text: markdown twins, llms.txt, structured data.

## What does an agentic advertising campaign consist of?

- **A prompt list:** the questions your buyers ask assistants, in their words, tracked across assistants before anything else.

- **Facts, written for machines:** what the product is, for whom, how it compares, in plain statements an agent can quote.

- **Placement in trusted sources:** your content and facts published on a developer platform that assistants already cite, in agent-readable formats.

- **Consistency:** the same facts on your site, on the platform and in your docs, so the agent finds one answer.

- **Measurement:** the share of answers that mention you, per prompt, per assistant, weekly, plus referrals from assistant domains.

The craft is answer engine optimization; what advertising adds is distribution to the sources that assistants read.

## How is agentic advertising different from ads inside AI assistants?

Ads inside assistants are a separate channel still taking shape: sponsored results or messages within the chat, sold by the assistant's maker, with whatever targeting and labelling they choose. Agentic advertising works upstream, on the sources the assistant reads when it composes an answer. It exists today on developer platforms, it does not depend on any assistant's ad product, and it also improves the pages for the humans who read them. Neither implies a relationship with the assistant's maker.

## How do you measure it?

Prompt by prompt. Before the campaign, record for each tracked prompt which products each assistant names and cites. During it, record the same weekly. The result is the share of answers that mention you and the share that cite your sources, per assistant, against the baseline. Add referrals from assistant domains in analytics, the self-reported "found you through an AI assistant" answer at sign-up, and the conversion rate of those visitors, which is usually above the site average. Expect movement first on assistants that search live.

**Common mistakes**

- Writing claims an agent cannot verify on your own pages.
- Facts that differ between your site, your docs and the platform.
- No prompt baseline before the campaign, so there is nothing to compare.
- Implying a partnership with an assistant's maker when the work is on the sources it reads.

**How developers experience it**

- They ask the assistant first and the search engine second, if at all.
- They trust a recommendation with a citation they can open.
- They notice when the cited page says exactly what the assistant said.

### Frequently asked questions

**How is agentic advertising different from ads inside ChatGPT or other assistants?**

Ads inside an assistant appear in its answers; agentic advertising places your facts in the trusted sources the assistant reads when it composes an answer. The second exists today on developer platforms; the first is a separate channel still taking shape.

**How is agentic advertising measured?**

By tracking the prompts your buyers ask across assistants and recording the share of answers that mention or cite you, before and during the campaign, and by watching referrals from assistant domains.

**Why do assistants trust developer platforms?**

Years of real reading, upvoting and discussion by developers, consistent factual content, and pages that are easy for machines to read. Assistants learned which developer sources to trust from that history.

**Does agentic advertising require a relationship with the AI companies?**

No. It works on the sources assistants read, not on the assistants, and no platform offering it can promise what an assistant will say. The result is measured, not guaranteed.
