## What is developer-led growth?

Developer-led growth is product-led growth applied to developer tools: a developer discovers the product, tries it without talking to sales, adopts it in their work, and the company expands from that usage to the team and the contract.

Also called: DLG, Product-led growth for developer tools.

It differs from generic product-led growth in who the user is. A developer rarely holds the budget, so the motion has two conversions: the developer who adopts, and the organisation that later pays. The product has to be worth adopting alone, and the path from one developer's usage to a team contract has to exist.

The funnel is discover, try, adopt, expand. Discovery happens in docs, content, communities and developer feeds; trying needs a free tier or trial that works without a conversation; adopting depends on developer experience; expanding is where sales finally enters, with usage data in hand.

The metrics follow the stages: reach in developer channels, sign-ups, activation (a first working result), weekly active usage, team adoption, and expansion revenue. Companies that run it well invest in the top of the funnel and the first ten minutes of the product more than in outbound.

## What are the stages of a developer-led funnel?

- **Discover:** a developer meets the product in docs, content, a community or a feed, usually while solving something.

- **Try:** a free tier or trial they can start without a conversation.

- **Adopt:** they use it in real work, which depends on developer experience and the first ten minutes.

- **Spread:** a second developer on the team, then a team workspace.

- **Expand:** the organisation standardises, adds SSO, compliance and a contract. This is where sales enters, with usage data in hand.

Every stage has a metric: reach, sign-ups, activation, weekly active developers, team adoption, expansion revenue. The stage most teams under-invest in is the first: discovery in the channels developers actually read.

## How is developer-led growth different from product-led growth?

Product-led growth assumes the user can pay. In developer tools the user usually cannot: a developer adopts, and the budget sits with a manager who was not in the trial. So developer-led growth needs two conversions, developer to adopter and team to customer, and a deliberate path between them: team plans, usage visible to managers, and a sales motion that starts from adoption rather than from a form.

The product bar is also higher. A consumer-style free tier can be a teaser; a developer free tier has to solve a real problem end to end, or no developer will bring it to their team.

## What role does marketing play in a developer-led motion?

Filling the top of the funnel with developers who will actually try the product, and making the moment of trying succeed. That means positioning a developer can verify, honest docs, a landing page that gets out of the way, and presence in the feeds, newsletters and communities on the stacks the product serves. Always-on presence matters more than launches, because developers discover tools when they have the problem, not when you announce.

On daily.dev that is a [verified company page](https://business.daily.dev/verified-company/) developers follow and promoted posts to the tags your product fits, so the next trial starts with someone who already has the problem it solves.

## When should sales get involved?

When a company shows several active developers, a team workspace, or usage that implies a need for security, compliance or billing. At that point sales helps the organisation standardise on what its developers chose, with the usage data as the business case. Sales calls before adoption slow developers down and rarely close. Set the trigger in the product data, not in the lead form: three active developers in one domain is a better signal than one "request a demo" click.

**Common mistakes**

- A free tier that stops before the first real result.
- No path from one developer's usage to a team plan a manager can buy.
- Sales reaching out at sign-up instead of at team adoption.
- Launch bursts with no always-on presence between them.

**How developers experience it**

- They try before they ask anyone's permission.
- They bring a tool to the team only after it worked for them alone.
- They resent a sales call that arrives before they have finished the quickstart.

## On daily.dev

The top of a developer-led funnel is discovery, and discovery happens in the feed. daily.dev Ads reaches developers by the stack they read about, so the next trial starts with someone who already works where your product fits.

## Developer-led growth vs product-led growth

| | Developer-led growth | Product-led growth |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **The user** | A developer, usually without the budget | Anyone, often the person who pays |
| **First conversion** | A developer adopts the tool in their work | A user upgrades from free to paid |
| **Second conversion** | The team and the contract follow usage | Seat expansion inside the account |
| **Sales enters** | At expansion, with usage data | Rarely, or for enterprise |
| **What the product must do** | Win one developer alone, then carry a team | Deliver value before the paywall |

### Frequently asked questions

**What is the difference between developer-led and product-led growth?**

Developer-led growth is product-led growth where the user is a developer who usually does not control the budget. The product must win the developer first, and the company needs a deliberate path from individual usage to a paid team or enterprise contract.

**Where does sales fit in developer-led growth?**

At expansion. Once a product is used by several developers in a company, sales can help the organisation standardise, add security and compliance requirements, and sign a contract, with usage data showing the value already delivered.

**What should the free tier do?**

Let one developer solve a real problem end to end without talking to anyone, and make the limits clear. A free tier that stops before the first result does not start a developer-led funnel.

**How do you measure developer-led growth?**

By stage: reach in developer channels, sign-ups, activation, weekly active developers, team adoption and expansion revenue. Cost per activated developer by channel is the number marketing manages.

**Does developer-led growth work for enterprise products?**

Yes, when the product has a self-serve entry developers can use alone. The enterprise contract comes after adoption inside the account, which is a stronger position for sales than a cold outbound call.
