Quick answer
Brand lift is the measured change in how people who saw your advertising think about you compared with people who did not: awareness, recall, consideration, preference. It is how brand campaigns, not bought for clicks, show they worked.
Brand lift
DefinitionThe classic method is a survey: two matched groups, one exposed to the campaign and one not, asked the same questions. The difference is the lift. Larger budgets run it through research vendors; smaller ones use lighter proxies such as branded search volume, direct traffic, mentions in developer communities and the response rate of the next campaign.
Also called: Brand awareness lift, Share of search.
How is a brand lift study run?
Two matched groups of the target audience, one exposed to the campaign and one held out, are asked the same short survey: have you heard of the brand (unaided and aided awareness), do you remember seeing its advertising (recall), would you consider it (consideration), would you choose it over alternatives (preference). The difference between the groups on each question is the lift. The survey runs during or just after the campaign, with enough respondents for the difference to be meaningful.
Research vendors and the larger ad platforms offer this as a product. For developer campaigns the practical constraint is sample size: the audience is small, so the survey has to reach a meaningful share of it, which is easier on a platform where the audience is concentrated.
What are the proxies when a study is out of budget?
- Branded search volume: searches for your name, weekly, against the category.
- Direct and branded-search traffic to your site during and after the campaign.
- Follows on your company page, as a cumulative line.
- Mentions and questions in developer communities and on social.
- The response to the next performance campaign, against the one before.
- Share of answers that mention you on the prompts your buyers ask AI assistants.
None is a controlled study. Together they move when awareness moves, and they cost nothing but a dashboard.
Common mistakes
- Running a brand campaign with no measurement set up before it starts.
- Changing the voice and the page between campaigns, so nothing accumulates.
- Expecting lift from a two-week burst.
- A tagline where a specific claim was needed.
How developers experience it
- They try the tool they recognise first when the need arrives.
- They remember the post that solved something, and the name on it.
- They can name the sponsors of the platform they open every day.
Why does brand matter in developer marketing?
Because buying is delayed and the shortlist is made before the evaluation. 95% of B2B buyers are out-of-market right now (LinkedIn B2B Institute / Ehrenberg-Bass, the 95-5 rule). When the need arrives, a developer tries the tools they already recognise; the campaign that reaches them today pays off in six months, if it was memorable and repeated. Performance campaigns harvest demand; brand campaigns put you on the list that demand is drawn from.
The developer version of brand is not a slogan. It is recognising the company page, remembering a post that solved something, and knowing roughly what the product does. Those come from specifics and consistency, not from a tagline.
What makes a campaign lift a developer brand?
Repetition in the places developers read, over months rather than weeks. One voice and one page, so exposures accumulate on the same memory. Posts with specific claims, because specifics are what gets remembered. Releases that show the product moving. And placements that attach the brand to the topics developers follow, such as a sponsored tag or a homepage logo, so recognition builds in context. A burst of impressions on a display network lifts nothing, because most of it was never looked at.

How it works on daily.dev
daily.dev plans are built for lift: a verified company page developers follow, posts in their feed week after week, and a logo spot on the homepage, so you are recognised when a developer's need arrives.
